What is a Design Sprint?

Design Sprints offer a structured and highly effective way of working together, resulting in tangible prototypes. Applying the Design Sprint principles leads in a short time to what are often better results, and that’s what we stand for: less waste, more impact

The Design Sprint comes originally from Google Ventures and was first described by Jake Knapp in his book ‘Sprint’. It is a four-day process that allows you to create effective solutions to major challenges in a short period of time. Whether you’re developing a new product or improving an existing one, you’ll do a lot of work in just a few days, saving a lot of wasted hours and significantly boosting your project.

You go through a Design Sprint with a carefully composed team capable of providing the right input on all facets. We facilitate this process and go through the following steps together with the team:

REMOTE DESIGN SPRINTS

If it’s not possible to meet in person, it’s also possible to do a Design Sprint remotely. We set up a ‘war room’ with online whiteboards and meeting tools to facilitate this. It’s the same principle, but a slightly different process. The main differences are shorter days, more breaks and a combination of online and offline exercises to keep the energy going.

Design Sprint principles

The Design Sprint principles are what make this method so successful. They enable you to make rapid progress and ensure that each team member provides equal input. Everyone is equal in a Sprint.

1. Getting started > being right:if you don’t start, you won’t get anywhere. Therefore, don’t wait for the right solution – instead, start trying things out.

2. Together alone: everyone is given the same space to formulate their thoughts, independently at first, and then together in order to arrive at a decision.

3. Tangible > discussion: thoughts become tangible and thus clear to everyone. As a result, talking is kept to a minimum and time is spent more efficiently.

4. Fail fast: develop and test a prototype within four days. This means failing quickly and discovering where you went wrong so you can get back on track fast.

When to use a Design sprint?

  • Idea validation: To validate the underlying idea and business model before designing a product.
  • Optimisation: To optimise something in the value chain or CX for an already successful product, in a shorter time than usual.
  • Cross functional: To connect different disciplines within a short period of time.
  • Strategy: To design and test a strategy and its further development, to determine what is needed and what priority it has.
  • Pitch: To make an internal pitch for an investment decision, for example, by presenting a tangible prototype of your idea to management and thus gathering resources for further development.
  • Alignment: To connect your team more effectively with each other around issues that are important in the company.
  • Campaign: To develop a campaign around a product or proposition. A Sprint brings together the most important stakeholders (such as the client and the creative agency) to quickly come up with a prototype for a campaign.

What is the result?

A Design Sprint always leads to a tangible and validated prototype of your idea, but it delivers much more than that as well:

  • Time gains: By working in a focused way on one thing for a few days, you get a lot more done than in the same time spread over a longer period.
  • Connection: The process is designed for making choices together. You move forward as a team and the idea increasingly becomes common property.
  • Job satisfactie: Ideas become tangible within a few days. The visible development provides an energy boost and job satisfaction. This way of working together makes every participant equally important and therefore provides balance and a sense of fulfilment.
  • A different way of working: “The process is flexible, the principles aren’t”. (Jake Knapp). These principles are intended to give each participant a voice in a structured way, while keeping the momentum of the process going. More often than not, our customers apply these principles in their daily work after a sprint.
